TOPPING PRE900 BALANCED PREAMPLIFIER

The Topping PRE900 is a reference-grade fully balanced analogue stereo preamplifier designed for high-performance Hi-Fi systems, dedicated power amplifiers and active loudspeakers. Combining four-channel differential circuitry, ultra-precise relay volume control and exceptionally low measured noise, it provides flexible analogue source management without introducing digital conversion into the signal path.

TRUE FULLY BALANCED ARCHITECTURE

The PRE900 features a four-channel balanced signal architecture with separate positive and negative signal paths for each stereo channel. This differential design is engineered to minimise interference, preserve channel separation and maintain signal integrity between the connected source and power amplifier.

Topping specifies a dynamic range and signal-to-noise ratio of 151dB, together with channel crosstalk of -150dB at 1kHz. Independent digital control and analogue circuitry power supplies further support its low-noise design.

1000-STEP RELAY VOLUME CONTROL

A precision relay-switched resistor network provides analogue volume adjustment with 0.1dB resolution. Unlike conventional digital attenuation, the volume control operates in the analogue domain, preserving the original digital resolution of the connected DAC.

Users can select 0.1dB, 0.2dB or 0.5dB adjustment steps to suit their preferred operating style. Dedicated channel-balance adjustment allows compensation of up to 9.5dB towards either channel.

THREE BALANCED ANALOGUE INPUTS

The rear panel provides three stereo balanced XLR/6.35mm TRS combination inputs, allowing several compatible analogue sources to remain connected simultaneously. Front-panel touch controls and the included remote provide convenient source selection.

A balanced stereo XLR preamplifier output connects to an external power amplifier or active loudspeakers. The PRE900 is a pure analogue line-stage preamplifier and does not include a DAC, headphone output or speaker power amplification.

THREE GAIN SETTINGS & HIGH OUTPUT HEADROOM

Selectable low, medium and high gain settings provide 0dB, +10.4dB and +19.9dB of voltage gain. These options allow the PRE900 to be matched to different source levels and downstream amplifier sensitivities.

The balanced output stage supports a maximum voltage swing of 69V peak-to-peak in low-gain mode, according to the manufacturer's published measurements. This substantial headroom is intended for demanding system integration, not as a recommended operating level for every connected amplifier.

SAFE VOLUME & SYSTEM INTEGRATION

An optional Safe Volume function helps prevent unexpectedly high playback levels when powering on the unit or switching inputs. Independent volume memories for each input and two user presets make the PRE900 suitable for systems with several sources or listening configurations.

12V trigger input and output connections support coordinated power operation with compatible components. A 2-inch colour display offers selectable signal information, VU meter and FFT spectrum views.

DESIGNED FOR REFERENCE STEREO SYSTEMS

The PRE900 is an excellent match for dedicated balanced DACs and separate power amplification. It can serve as the analogue control centre between a source such as the Topping D900 and a stereo pair of Topping B200 monoblock amplifiers.

Its balanced connectivity and adjustable gain also make it suitable for premium Class AB and Class D power amplifiers, provided their input sensitivity and maximum voltage requirements are respected.
